Chief Jim Harrison

The tones rang out for former Sugarcreek Fire Chief Jim Harrison one last time on Saturday night as a part of the Fireman’s Funeral held at 7 p.m. at the Sugarcreek First United Church of Christ. Men and women who valued the time they got to spend with Harrison as a friend, as a colleague, as a fellow firefighter gathered together to remember, to recall and to send forth the well wishes for Harrison’s journey upward. Harrison, 64, died as a result of liver cancer. He leaves behind his bride Nancy and their daughter Melissa Harrison and her husband Micheal James. Current Sugarcreek Fire Chief Kevin Miller praised Harrison for his forward-thinking and his ability to get people from all walks of life to work together for the greater good. “The Sugarcreek Fire Department would not be where it is today without his hard work, commitment, and sacrifice.” Dr. Kevin Miller stated. “Chief Harrison was a dedicated servant to the Sugarcreek community. We will forever be indebted to Jim for the service he provided.”.In addition to being one of Sugarcreek’s most dynamic and longest-serving fire chief’s, Harrison was known for his gear head knowledge, specifically at the helm of Harrison Auto Parts. Harrison’s service to the community as part of the Sugarcreek Business Association and the Ohio Swiss Festival, as well as the Fab 50s Fling, set him apart from the rest. And perhaps, as many recalled while standing in line, waiting to pay their respects on Saturday, said, “They don’t make them like Jim anymore.”Anyone wishing to make a memorial donation in his memory are asked to contact the Sugarcreek First United Church of Christ or Truman House Community Hospice.
